Back of the book blurb:
When magic strikes and Atlanta goes to pieces, it’s a job for Kate Daniels…

Drafted into working for the Order of Merciful Aid, mercenary Kate Daniels has more paranormal problems than she knows what to do with these days. And in Atlanta, where magic comes and goes like the tide, that’s saying a lot.

But when Kate’s werewolf friend Derek is discovered nearly dead, she finds herself with a personal stake and a while new level of problem. As her investigations lead her to the Midnight Games – the invitation-only, no-holds-barred, ultimate preternatural fighting tournament – she uncovers a dark plot that may forever alter the face of Atlanta’s shapeshifting community…

My review:
I only discovered Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels series about a year ago but they hooked me fast. This is book three in the series and is just as strong as the first two.

The world that Kate Daniels lives in has enough “normal” every day markers for you to be able to picture what is being talked about (streets in Atlanta, etc). But the alterations that have come about due to the magic and tech waves are a fantastic change and they draw you even deeper into the story with each revelation. If you haven’t read any of this series, then definitely start with book one, Magic Bites, so that you can fully emerge yourself in this fantastically interesting world that Ilona Andrews has created.

This book focuses on the relationship between Kate Daniels and the shapeshifters, even though that is seemingly a secondary storyline to the goings on in the Midnight Games. I love the way that the story didn’t get overrun with fight scenes, even in a book all about fights. The descriptions and narrative held strong and I literally couldn’t put the book down until I finished it!

The fight scenes were so well detailed that you knew exactly where and what everyone was doing and the overall plot moved with perfect pace – nothing dragged and nothing felt too rushed either. Her relationship with Curran also comes into play in this book and his character is one of my absolute favourites! The two of them together in any situation is just such an interesting read – sometimes fun, sometimes serious, but always enjoyable to learn more about. Just as the world itself, and their roles in it, is so fascinating to delve into.

I enjoy the way there are light hearted moments to mix in with the serious elements, and each character is so very individual that you feel personal attachments to each of them in a different way. Kate Daniels is a very likable character and her actions, and motivations, are not only interesting to read but they draw you deeper into the story with her.

Overall, this book was a fantastic read; an excellent addition to an already strong series and I cannot wait to read the next one 🙂

Life

Something Witchy This Way Comes

Last night I heard small footsteps, running on the stairs.
But when I looked outside my door, nobody was there!

I crept along the landing, crouched down on the floor,
Do my eyes deceive me? I found a little door!

As I reached to touch it, something happened – strange indeed!
I started to get smaller, not much bigger than a weed!

Through the door I ventured, whatever would I see?
A row of lovely lanterns, to guide the way for me!

I went along the pathway and then into a wood,
There hung a sign to warn me, but it did no good.

Just like a little cat, curiosity did take hold,
So onward did I venture, feeling rather bold.

There I met some dragons, keepers of the way,
They looked me up and down again, then told me not to stray.

I walked around a mystic pool, with lanterns all around,

Then from my little vantage point, the Haunted House I found!

I met some other travelers, walking the same way,
They told me to come with them, to a party there that day.

In the Haunted House’s garden, some witches there were brewing!
I stepped a little closer, to find out what they were stewing.

The hostess came to greet me, with her guardian giant frog!
She said inside the cauldron was the party-goers grog!

We went along some fairy steps, that led up past the pool,
I dipped a toe into the water, it was so nice and cool!

The party then got under way, a Halloween witches ball!
We danced and laughed and made good friends, a fun time had by all.

It started to get very late and “I must be on my way”,
The witches and the little cats were so sad to hear me say.

The magic of the little door – a Halloween witches spell,
I raised my glass to toast new friends, then bid them all farewell!

I made my way back through the wood, along the twisting path,
Remembering good times I’d had, I gave a little laugh.

The tiny door came into sight and through it I did crawl,
As soon as I was home again, I then got very tall!

I hope you liked my story; this Halloween Blog Party post,
To all my new found friends on here, I give a welcoming toast!

Magic and laughter fill the air, as leaves do start to fall.
I wish you Happy Halloween! Best witches, one and all!

Get The Book…

One of my favourite movies is Practical Magic 🙂 I’ve watched it so many times and it still makes me happy to curl up with a hot chocolate and watch it on a winter’s night with some candles and my cats to keep me company. Or with a glass of wine (or margaritas!) with my best friend and some popcorn 🙂

I love everything about it, the story, the cast, the feel-good vibe it gives and obviously the witchyness of it all! So I was a bit disappointed to find a blog post yesterday talking about a Practical Magic Blog Party…that I’ve missed 🙁 It took place in late September and I would have really enjoyed being part of it, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it’ll happen next year too!

Here’s a link to the Blog Party page, for anyone whose interested and might like to take part if it happens again: http://pmblogparty.blogspot.com/ Hopefully it went off without a hitch and I’m sure everyone had a great time with it! It looked like a lot of fun 🙂
